The story
A Modern Classics Novella · by Holland Ashby
My Fair Slugger
Vinnie Kelly can fix anyone’s image. She just never expected her hardest case to be a man the whole league has backwards.
Vinnie is the fixer teams call when a player becomes a problem — and her newest file is Beau Leomaris, the Carolina Catfish’s most maddening slugger. He gives interviews like hostage negotiations, hasn’t handed a reporter a usable quote in years, and the front office wants him cut by the All-Star break.
Everyone says he’s withholding because he thinks he’s above it all. Vinnie is the first person to suspect they’ve got him completely backwards.
She has a few short weeks to turn the league’s least camera-friendly player into someone sponsors can love: coach him through interviews, get him through a charity gala without an incident, and rewrite the story the whole league believes about him.
The trouble is, the closer Vinnie gets to the real Beau, the more she wonders whether the story that actually needs rewriting is her own.
A My Fair Lady retelling with dirt-stained uniforms, slow-burn tension, and a hero who was never the problem everyone made him out to be.
